A chemical peel is a procedure in which a chemical solution is applied to the skin to remove damaged skin cells, correct scars, treat wrinkles, and reduce the appearance of discolorations. Different types of chemical peels have varyingranges of penetration into the skin.
No matter what kind you get, it is important to properly prepare your skin before your chemical peel and take care of it following the treatment. Proper preparation and care are imperative for a successful chemical peel and ensure a more effective treatment that heals quickly.

Preparing for a Chemical Peel
Prior to your procedure, 2 weeks, you will want to follow the below preparation activities to properly prepare your skin and optimize the treatment efficacy.
Limit UV Exposure
UV exposure can damage your skin, so you will want to be sure to limit exposure as much as you can in the weeks before your procedure.
Wear Sunscreen
In the same boat as avoiding UV exposure, wear sunscreen every day to help prevent the skin from UV exposure.
No Exfoliating
You will want to stop using any facial scrubs or other exfoliants a week before your chemical peel.
Monitor Skin Care Products
You will need to discontinue any retinol or retin-A topical medications at least 48 hours before your chemical peel is scheduled.
Your doctor may also prescribe a special lotion to improve treatment, such as a glycolic acid lotion. Whatever your doctor prescribes, make sure you use it according to their instructions.
Caring For Your Face After a Chemical Peel
Following the below steps can help your face heal following a chemical peel and ensure that your results are long-lasting.
Apply a Protective Ointment
It’s common for skin after a chemical peel to be red and irritated. Others may notice some continued burning, swelling, or stinging. To help soothe the area, you can apply a protective ointment such as petroleum jelly.
Ease Into Makeup
If you received a light chemical peel, you can wear makeup the day following your procedure. However, if you get a medium peel, you will want to refrain from putting on any makeup for a week.
Wear Sunscreen
To help prolong the results of your chemical peel, make sure you are wearing sunscreen every day and are limiting UV exposure. Ideally, you will want to stay out of the sun until your face has healed.
Follow Doctor’s Instructions
Your doctor will provide instructions on what to use to wash your face. Make sure you are following their instructions to avoid irritation.
Avoid Steam
Make sure to avoid any saunas, steam baths, or Jacuzzis, as the excessive heat may damage your sensitive skin.
Do Not Pick Peeling Skin
As the skin begins to heal, it will start to peel. As tempting as it may be, do not pick or pull on this peeling skin. To help relieve any dryness or tightness, apply a moisturizer whenever the need arises.
Refrain From Other Treatments
Do not have any other facial treatments for at least two weeks following your chemical peel; you need to give your skin time to heal.
