How Long Does Skin Take to Heal After Laser Resurfacing?

Laser resurfacing is a popular treatment for reducing wrinkles, scars, and sun damage, but one of the biggest questions people have is: How long will my skin take to heal?

Understanding the Healing Process

Healing after laser resurfacing depends on several factors, including the type of laser used, the depth of treatment, and your skin type. Generally, recovery follows this timeline:

  • First 24-48 Hours: Your skin will be red, swollen, and may feel sunburned. Some oozing or crusting may occur, especially with deeper treatments.
  • Days 3-7: The redness starts to fade, and your skin may begin to peel as it heals. Keeping the skin moisturized is essential during this stage.
  • Week 1-2: Most of the surface-level healing is complete, but deeper layers are still regenerating. Pinkness may linger for a few weeks.
  • 1-3 Months: Full collagen remodeling continues under the surface, improving skin texture and firmness over time.

How to Speed Up Healing

While patience is key, you can support your skin’s healing with the following tips:

Follow Post-Treatment Instructions: Your dermatologist will provide a detailed care plan—stick to it!

Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps your skin heal faster.

Use Gentle, Hydrating Skincare: Look for fragrance-free and non-irritating products.

Avoid Sun Exposure: UV rays can worsen redness and delay healing. Wear broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily.

Don’t Pick or Peel: Let your skin shed naturally to avoid scarring.

Eat Skin-Boosting Foods: Nutrient-rich foods like berries, nuts, and leafy greens support collagen production.

What to Expect Based on Laser Type

Different laser treatments have different recovery times. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Ablative Lasers (CO2, Erbium): These are more intense and penetrate deeper into the skin, requiring 10-14 days of recovery.
  • Non-Ablative Lasers (Fraxel, IPL): These are gentler and work beneath the surface, leading to a shorter recovery of about 3-5 days.

When to Call Your Dermatologist

Some redness and peeling are normal, but contact your provider if you experience:

  • Excessive swelling or pain beyond the first few days
  • Signs of infection, such as pus, extreme redness, or fever
  • Prolonged redness lasting more than a few months
