Fibrous Papules of the Face and Nose & How to Remove Them

Don’t DIY your way to removing papules on your face or nose. There are safer ways to remove them.

The human body occasionally throws us a curveball, in the form of peculiar bumps and growths that seem to appear out of nowhere – fibrous papules. Though seemingly harmless, these tiny protrusions can be a source of concern for many individuals. Understanding what these tiny lesions are can provide some peace of mind and guidance on how to deal with them.

What is a Fibrous Papule?

A fibrous papule is a benign (non-cancerous) skin lesion that typically emerges on the face, often on or around the nose. It presents itself as a small, firm, dome-shaped bump that is skin-colored or might even have a slightly pink hue.

When touched, its surface feels smooth, and usually measures less than 5 mm in diameter. When you see this little bump, remember it’s more of a cosmetic concern than a health issue.

Why Do Fibrous Papules Occur?

The exact cause of fibrous papules remains unknown. However, these lesions are believed to be an overgrowth of the collagen and fibrous tissue in the skin. Some experts point to sun exposure, genetics, or minor traumas, but concrete evidence is still scant.

What’s reassuring, though, is that fibrous papules are not a result of infection, and they’re not contagious. So no, you didn’t get it from that towel at the gym or the pillow you shared with your roommate.

Do Fibrous Papules Go Away?

Fibrous papules are persistent. Once they appear, they usually stay. They don’t grow much in size, nor do they evolve into something more serious. They’re not painful, and don’t pose any health risks. However, if aesthetics are a concern and you’re not particularly thrilled about having them, there are ways to show it the exit.

Fibrous Papule Removal – Team Dermatology Memorial and Sugar Land, Texas

The temptation to squeeze or pick at fibrous papules may be hard to resist, but it’s a habit best left unindulged. The safest and most effective way to remove a fibrous papule is to visit your dermatologist at Team Dermatology. There are a number of ways to get rid of fibrous papules, including:

  1. Excision: The dermatologist uses a scalpel to cut out the papule. It’s a straightforward procedure and typically leaves minimal scarring.
  2. Electrocautery: This involves burning off the papule using an electric current. It’s precise, and the risk of scarring is low.
  3. Laser Treatment: Ablative lasers target the papule and break it down, with minimal impact on surrounding tissue.
  4. Topical Treatments: While not as effective as the procedures mentioned above, there are creams and ointments that might help in reducing the appearance of the papule. Always discuss with your dermatologist before applying anything.
